- The 2027 Defense R&D Summit will explore trusted AI, quantum and more
Systems Planning & Analysis has launched a commercial version of AthenaSight, a software platform designed to support mission planning, wargaming and operational assessment for national security organizations.

SPA’s commercial release of AthenaSight puts mission planning and wargaming tools directly in the hands of defense and national security users. As the Department of War continues to invest in technologies driving the future of warfare, the Potomac Officers Club’s 2027 Defense R&D Summit on Feb. 4 will bring together DOW and national security technology officials to discuss unmanned systems, trusted AI and autonomy, quantum computing, advanced space technologies and more. SPA said Wednesday organizations can now directly evaluate, license and deploy the software. The commercial version includes licensing and intellectual property protections and has undergone security verification and validation. SPA also provides configuration, installation, software maintenance and other professional services.
What Is AthenaSight?
AthenaSight is a mission planning and wargaming software platform designed to bring geospatial, infrastructure and operational force data into one collaborative digital environment. It works to allow users to build scenarios, compare courses of action and identify mission gaps and potential solutions.
The platform supports real-time multiplayer sessions and covers planning from tactical to campaign levels across domains.
Marine Corps Security Force battalions use AthenaSight to assess strategies and force laydowns, while Navy Strategic Systems Programs has applied it to capability integration, training and acquisition decisions. A U.S. Coast Guard unit also used the software to downselect vessels.
What Did SPA Leaders Say About the AthenaSight Commercial Release?
SPA CEO Rich Sawchak said the company continues to invest in technologies that strengthen the mission expertise it delivers to clients.
“Making AthenaSight commercially available gives national security organizations greater access to a proven capability for examining complex mission challenges, testing alternatives, and making informed decisions faster,” Sawchak added.
Mark Adams, chief capabilities officer at SPA, noted that the platform reflects the company’s broader effort to transition mission-focused technologies from development into commercial offerings.
“Clients can operate the technology directly or draw on SPA’s technical and mission expertise for modeling, scenario development, and complex operational analysis,” Adams explained.
What Other Developments Has SPA Announced Recently?
Before its commercial release, AthenaSight was already in use at SPA’s Advanced Analytics Lab, a 14,400-square-foot facility at the company’s Alexandria, Virginia, headquarters that SPA detailed in September. Teams there apply AthenaSight alongside the company’s GCAM and ArcherEye tools to conduct cross-domain warfare assessments and layered homeland defense analyses.
SPA secured a $126 million contract to provide professional support services to the Naval Sea Systems Command’s Naval Special Warfare Program Office, with performance extending through March 2031. Earlier, the company landed a five-year contract valued at over $100 million to support the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering with communications, stakeholder engagement and business operations services.
On the leadership front, SPA added former BlueHalo CFO Robert Richards to its board of directors in July. In May, it appointed four fellows to advance its software engineering, DevSecOps and cloud, applied AI and digital wargaming capabilities. The company named Douglas Coleman chief legal officer in February, weeks after appointing Raj Badhwar chief information officer.
