BAE Systems has established its presence in Weld County, Colorado, buying a 130,000-square-foot building to scale up production of space-based hardware and sensors.

The company said Wednesday that the property will help it keep up with rising customer demand and business growth. BAE plans to retrofit the building and buy equipment through the end of 2026. Opening is set for early 2028.

Commenting on the facility acquisition, Alexis Wang, BAE’s vice president of operations, said, “We look forward to expanding our production capabilities in Colorado with our first facility in Weld County. The support we received from the Weld County Commissioners and the State of Colorado played a key role in our ability to locate this essential production work for the company in Colorado, extending our manufacturing presence in the state.”

How Is BAE Expanding Its U.S. Manufacturing Footprint?

BAE plans to hire more than 200 workers for the facility within the next two years. It projects a workforce of about 600 once the site reaches full capacity.

The new site adds to BAE’s existing production operations in Boulder, Westminster and Broomfield.

The Colorado purchase follows a $135 million investment BAE announced in May to upgrade its sites in Hudson, New Hampshire, and Austin, Texas. BAE is paying for those upgrades entirely with its own capital. It said the work will speed delivery of critical systems and software for U.S. military readiness and strengthen the defense industrial base

Which Space Programs Is BAE Supporting?

The purchase comes after a busy stretch for the company’s space business. Earlier in October, Space Systems Command tapped BAE to design and demonstrate jam-resistant radio frequency terminals for a space-based data layer, using the company’s software-defined radios.

In September, BAE completed the critical design review for the Space Force’s Resilient Missile Warning and Tracking Medium Earth Orbit Epoch 2 program. Under a $1.2 billion contract awarded in June 2025, BAE is building 10 satellites for the program. NOAA also chose BAE Space & Mission Systems to supply microwave sounder data under its Space-Based Environmental Monitoring contract.

On the product side, BAE added the refuelable Ascent spacecraft to its Elevation line in April and expects to deliver a first pathfinder by 2027. In June, the company said its Endura system-on-chip processor had shown it can operate in natural space and high-radiation conditions. The chip uses BAE’s radiation-hardened 45-nanometer technology and is produced at its New York fabrication facility.

Additionally, the company delivered in 2025 NASA’s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory and NOAA’s Space Weather Follow On-L1 spacecraft to Florida for launch.
