A recent survey by Carahsoft Technology, in partnership with CHIME, has found that nearly all healthcare organizations across the United States have deployed electronic health record, or EHR, systems and almost half of them are exploring opportunities to optimize EHR performance.
Tim Boltz, sales director at Carahsoft, discussed the survey findings in a blog post published on the company website on Tuesday.

What Are Healthcare Organizations’ EHR Priorities?
For the survey, Carahsoft asked EHR users across different care environments. The company found that while cost and security remain essential requirements for EHR, they are no longer the primary drivers for decision-making.
Polled healthcare professionals identified customizability and training support as the top two EHR priorities, with artificial intelligence capabilities, customer-facing experience and security rounding out the top five. Additional priorities include cost efficiency, interoperability, easy integration, user experience and workflow productivity.
How Do Healthcare Organizations Use AI in EHR?
The survey also revealed that nearly 80 percent of healthcare organizations polled already use AI in their EHR systems, with 38.3 percent deploying the tool to accomplish documentation tasks. Meanwhile, 19.1 percent said they utilize robotic process automation and large language models.
Boltz emphasized the role of EHR in advancing AI in healthcare in a previous interview. The Carahsoft official explained that access to structured data enables AI to generate insights and supports clinicians in delivering personalized treatment and care.
In a March blog post, he also provided best practices for deploying secure and ethical AI in healthcare, such as adopting risk management techniques, continuous performance monitoring and promoting transparency.
