  • The NGEAU enables Growler aircraft to autonomously analyze and counter unfamiliar, agile or adaptive enemy radar signals
  • Work on the contract will be carried out through 2032

The U.S. Navy recently awarded General Dynamics Mission Systems a sole-source, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract worth $184 million for work on the Next Generation Electronics Attack Unit, or NGEAU, as part of broader efforts to modernize the EA-18G Growler aircraft.

What Is the Scope of the Navy IDIQ Contract?

GDMS said Wednesday that the contract was awarded in September and features a firm-fixed-price element that calls for full-rate production of NGEAU and a cost-plus-fixed-fee element that covers sustainment support. Work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Bloomington, Minnesota, through 2032.

Commenting on the contract, GDMS Vice President and General Manager of Land and Air Systems Scott Dunderdale said, “General Dynamics Mission Systems is proud to support the U.S. Navy’s EA-18G Growler modernization with the Next Generation Electronic Attack Unit. This award advances the production and sustainment of a resilient, open-architecture capability designed to help ensure the fleet can rapidly adapt to evolving electronic-warfare threats.”

What Is the NGEAU?

The Next Generation Electronics Attack Unit is part of the Growler Block II series of hardware and software upgrades to the Navy’s EA-18G. The Navy said NGEAU uses machine-learning algorithms to help the aircraft autonomously analyze and counter unfamiliar, agile or adaptive enemy radar signals in crowded electromagnetic environments, Breaking Defense reported in 2025.

What Other Navy Contracts Has GDMS Received This Year?

The NGEAU award is one of several Navy contracts GDMS has received this year. Other awards include a $194 million contract modification issued in September that calls for engineering and technical services in support of the Nuclear-Armed, Sea-Launched Cruise Missile, or SLCM-N, Fire Control Subsystem.

In May, the company received a $66.2 million contract to continue Small Business Innovation Research Phase III development of the Data Acquisition and Retrieval System, which supports testing for Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines. The ordering period ends in May 2031.

In February, the company received a $255.1 million contract for support of the Strategic Weapon System fire control subsystem on Navy submarines. Options worth an additional $485.3 million would raise the potential total to $740.4 million if all are exercised.
