Login.gov, the federal government’s single sign-in portal for public services, now accepts mobile driver’s licenses, or mDLs, as valid identification for remote unattended identity checks. Xcelerate Solutions said Tuesday it integrated the capability with its partner Socure under a 2024 General Services Administration blanket purchase agreement for next-generation Login.gov identity proofing.
Xcelerate said the addition moves the platform toward more secure verification centered on mobile devices.
What Does mDL Support Add to Login.gov?
Login.gov can now pull identity data directly from state-issued digital credentials built to ISO/IEC 18013 standards. The companies said the credentials offer tamper-evident verification, reduce reliance on physical cards and improve accessibility for users who favor mobile-first interactions.
The feature runs inside Socure’s FedRAMP Moderate environment, authorized under the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program. It draws on the behavioral analytics, fraud detection and real-time screening tools that already support Login.gov’s verification service.
What Did Xcelerate & Socure Officials Say About mDLs?
Jim Dufford, vice president at Xcelerate, said mDLs are changing the way Americans establish their identity online, citing gains in security, privacy and user experience.
“Supporting mDLs on Login.gov aligns with our mission of helping the government deliver secure, seamless services,” Dufford said.
Jordan Burris, head of public sector at Socure, said agencies face a surge in fraud driven by synthetic identities, organized rings and artificial intelligence-enabled attacks that can outpace older systems.
He said accepting mDLs as cryptographically verifiable credentials helps Login.gov “modernize identity verification in a way that strengthens fraud prevention” while easing access for legitimate users.
How Does the mDL Rollout Build on Xcelerate & Socure’s Login.gov Work?
GSA selected the two companies in 2024, alongside seven other vendors, for the Login.gov identity proofing agreement, which covers document capture and validation, biometric comparison and identity resolution. Their joint identity-proofing process now combines biometrics, machine learning, AI and digital credentials.
Socure has also broadened its identity portfolio, with the company partnering in May with Thomson Reuters on AI-enabled identity verification and fraud prevention for government and regulated industries. In July, it launched Remote Verifier, a tool that gives live agents AI-driven fraud signals when automated checks do not clear an applicant.
