- Accelerators deployed across 20-plus programs
- Apex Innovation formalized over past two years
- Quantum, robotics and biotech on five-year radar
Oliver Sadorra‘s path into government contracting started with modeling and simulation work for the Missile Defense Agency as an intern, then ran through systems engineering for Air Force initiatives and technical support for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency‘s Tactical Technology Office. More than two decades later, he is chief growth officer of Dark Wolf Solutions, steering business development, capture and proposal efforts while keeping one foot planted in the company’s research and development agenda.
Sadorra doesn’t buy the idea that artificial intelligence remade Dark Wolf. In his view, the technology put the company’s founding values under pressure and found them sturdy. The more pressing shift is external: adversaries are automating attacks with AI, and defenders now have to outpace them just to stay safe. Dark Wolf’s response is a set of AI-driven “accelerators,” packaged as field-ready capabilities through its Apex Innovation program.
In this Executive Spotlight interview, Sadorra walked us through the five values that anchor Dark Wolf’s “pack,” explained what growth means beyond contract wins and made the case that cybersecurity’s real need lies where security, software engineering and AI overlap.
(We last spoke to Sadorra in 2024 about the company’s growth strategy and where generative AI was at the time.)
ExecutiveBiz: What do you see as the defining characteristics of Dark Wolf’s culture and values?
Oliver Sadorra: From the very early days of Dark Wolf, we established five core values that define who we are and shape our culture at Dark Wolf.
First and foremost, we are “customer first.” We understand that our work addresses some of the most pressing challenges in national security, so we focus on doing what best serves the interests of our customers.
“Outcomes matter” and “diabolically creative” drive our approach to solutioning. Innovation, out-of-the-box thinking, and relentless execution and delivery are key tenets that we reward within Dark Wolf, whether we’re conducting penetration testing or deploying next-generation AI and data platforms.
And lastly, we have “embrace evolution” and “pack life.” Our workforce comprises some of the most talented professionals in industry, and we foster an environment where they operate as a pack and collaborate to solve hard problems. Furthermore, we provide an infrastructure — to include our Training Bounty Program, weekly Lunch-n-Learns and our Cyber Academy — that our wolves leverage to continuously level up their knowledge and skills.
EBiz: How has the AI era changed the company’s culture?
Sadorra: AI hasn’t necessarily changed the culture that we’ve established nor the core values that form our foundation. If anything, AI has validated that foundation, demonstrating that we are poised to adapt to continued technology evolution.
Looking at the national security landscape, our adversaries are leveraging AI to automate attacks, exploit vulnerabilities and conduct other malicious activities. Our posture must expand beyond “speed of mission” to also include “speed for safety.” This means that we must stay ahead and deliver secure capabilities faster than our adversaries can deploy theirs. Employing AI technologies is central to achieving that speed. Adhering to our values, our pack is smartly integrating AI to enhance our internal workflows, elevate our solution development and augment the deep technical expertise that we bring as a firm.
This mindset has also directly shaped our approach to internal research and development, program execution and customer delivery. Over the last two years, we formalized our Apex Innovation program to focus on developing “accelerators” that harness AI and other emerging technologies to meet our customers’ needs for rapid delivery. Focused on critical mission challenges — such as data management and governance, autonomous systems, accreditation and compliance, offensive and defensive cybersecurity, and secure DevOps — we package our accelerators as field-ready capabilities to compress delivery times and provide immediate impact value to the mission.
EBiz: What are some goals you have for Dark Wolf over the next five years and what concrete steps do you have to take to get there?
Sadorra: As Dark Wolf’s chief growth officer, my easy answer would be to grow; however, as I look at the five-year horizon, growth means more than winning new contracts and improving top-line performance. We look to create a sustainable path to expand our mission impact to the national security landscape. Below are three focus areas to get there:
- As discussed with AI, we must stay at the forefront of emerging technology and look forward at both the forthcoming threats as well as the potential opportunities. It is without question that the evolution of technology will continue and likely won’t slow. We are seeing the massive wave in AI now, for instance, that will certainly continue to advance. In the next few years, however, we’ll also see the rise of quantum, robotics and even biotechnology. Through Apex Innovation and other internal initiatives, we have the infrastructure and framework to identify, evaluate and close the gap on these emerging domains.
- Additionally, our highest priority is to continuously improve and enhance the solutions that we are delivering to the national security mission. Through our accelerators, which we have currently deployed across more than 20 programs, including programs of record, and our continued commitment to developing solutions tailored to mission needs, we have honed our workforce and workflows to focus on rapid development and operationalization of capabilities.
- Finally, growth means taking our proven frameworks and capabilities and broadening our mission support and corporate offerings across defense and intelligence customers. Last year, we formalized our corporate capabilities, but that is an evolving task. Also, while we had some solid growth wins this past year supporting new agencies and organizations, we look to continue scaling our impact over the next five years to meet new mission needs.
EBiz: Is there a cybersecurity skill deficiency in the workforce and if so, how is Dark Wolf combating this challenge?
Sadorra: This is a great question! I work with and have mentored incredible individuals that are currently in the cybersecurity field today, so I wouldn’t characterize it as a cybersecurity skill deficiency. I would, however, call for the expanded need for thought leadership and applied understanding at the intersection of cybersecurity, software engineering and artificial intelligence.
Internally within Dark Wolf, we focus on upskilling and cross-pollination of talent. Our cybersecurity engineers work side by side and collaborate with our DevOps and platform engineers, our data and AI specialists, and our mission enablement subject matter experts. This cooperation among our workforce encourages active knowledge sharing and facilitates the collective and individual growth of skills across the company.
Externally, Dark Wolf continues to be heavily invested in bringing our thought leadership to the community. From blogs to podcasts to speaking engagements, leaders across all our practices are sharing insights with industry in an open-source capacity. We also have our drone and Android security playbooks posted openly on our website, and we continue to lead hackathons and workshops at major industry events such as DEF CON and Black Hat. Personally, I am driven by a passion to foster our next-generation workforce, and I’d like to think we’re doing our part at Dark Wolf to move the industry forward.
Who Is Oliver Sadorra?
Oliver Sadorra has served as chief growth officer of Dark Wolf Solutions since January 2019, leading the company’s business development, capture and proposal operations. He joined Dark Wolf in 2015 as a principal and was promoted to director in 2018 before stepping into his current role.
Since 2024, Sadorra has also sat on the board of the Growth Officers Association, a nonprofit membership organization that widens the professional network for growth leaders in the GovCon market.
Before Dark Wolf, he was a program manager at RSR, supporting a multiple-task-order indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract for the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. That stint followed nearly 11 years at SRA International, which later became part of CSRA and now falls under General Dynamics Information Technology. At SRA, Sadorra worked his way from systems engineer on Air Force initiatives to executive technical assistant for DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office, then to project manager and senior systems engineer on a federal software and systems development effort.
