Retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Tony Carullo has joined TurbineOne as a board adviser to help the artificial intelligence company bring its technology into military operations. The company announced the appointment on LinkedIn Thursday.

In his new role, Carullo will advise TurbineOne on aligning its technology with Navy operational requirements and identifying opportunities to expand its use across naval and joint missions.

Who Is Tony Carullo?

Carullo has four decades of military leadership experience, with expertise in naval missions, defense strategy, investment decisions and force modernization. He most recently served as the Navy’s senior strategy director. During his tenure, his team delivered the Navy’s first Warfighting Concept in decades.

He held multiple senior posts at U.S. Strategic Command and was director of maritime operations and deputy commander of the U.S. 6th Fleet. He also served as the deputy commander and chief of staff for the commander of Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Carullo also commanded USS Greeneville, a nuclear-powered submarine.

How Will Carullo Support TurbineOne’s Military AI Efforts?

TurbineOne CEO Ian Kalin said the company sees opportunities for frontline AI to address the Navy’s operational needs, particularly in contested maritime environments. He described Carullo as someone who understands how the service plans investments and prepares its future force.

For his part, Carullo emphasized the need for AI and machine learning to function in disconnected environments, allowing warfighters to make decisions at the tactical edge without depending on programmers working remotely. He said he joined TurbineOne due to its focus on making AI adaptable and operationally relevant in the environments where military personnel serve.

What Else Has TurbineOne Done Related to AI?

TurbineOne’s work with military customers extends beyond its focus on frontline AI; the company is also investing in facilities and developing machine learning applications for defense missions.

The company opened a facility in Old Town, Maine, in August as part of efforts to develop advanced AI and autonomous technologies. The new T1 MachineWorks facility is intended to expand the company’s footprint in Maine’s defense technology and advanced manufacturing sector.

In 2023, TurbineOne worked with the Defense Innovation Unit and the Department of War’s FutureG and 5G Office on machine learning applications for geolocation and threat detection. Kalin said at the time that the industry was “still in its early days of AI-driven perception.” He forecasted that AI will enable queries such as “Show me all the Chinese ships near Taiwan” and help intelligence analysts ask complex scenario-related questions such as “Which indicators have strong signals that China has started its initial phase of a Taiwanese invasion?”
