Starburst has appointed Kerman Lau as chief financial officer to oversee its finance operations as the Boston-based data and artificial intelligence company expands its enterprise platform.

The company said Thursday that Lau will work with senior leadership on growth strategy, capital allocation, operating performance and long-term value creation.

What Did Kerman Lau Say About Joining Starburst?

Lau said prospective peer relationships drove his decision. He noted that early talks with Starburst co-founder and CEO Justin Borgman and the executive team signaled the potential for a close partnership capable of producing significant outcomes. He described Starburst as occupying “the sweet spot of one of the biggest shifts happening in enterprise technology,” as AI agents increasingly demand the same governed, high-performance data access that human users require, along with business context.

“I believe Starburst is incredibly well positioned to be the gateway for any workload, human or agentic, to reach the data it needs,” Lau said.

Borgman said Lau knows how to pursue high-priority opportunities while instilling the fiscal rigor a scaling company requires.

What Experience Does Kerman Lau Bring?

Lau has more than 25 years’ experience at software companies and multinational firms. As Moveworks’ CFO, he oversaw the company’s expansion into generative and agentic AI, and its sale to ServiceNow.

According to Starburst, his career has centered on building strong finance teams and applying data and technology to sharpen executive decision-making.

How Is Starburst Positioned in the Enterprise AI Market?

Starburst offers governed access to data across on-premises, multicloud and hybrid environments. It seeks to enable AI applications and agents to move from pilot projects into production without first centralizing information. Its platform runs on the Trino and Apache Iceberg open standards.

The company reported in March that annual recurring revenue topped $100 million, up nearly 40 percent year over year, with its financial services business climbing 85 percent.

In January, an Enterprise Strategy Group study found the platform delivered 45 percent lower total cost of ownership than alternatives and a 414 percent three-year return on investment.
