GreyNoise Intelligence has appointed Steve Miller, former artificial intelligence threats mission lead at Google, as principal threat researcher.
Miller joins GreyNoise as part of a group of four senior leaders the cybersecurity company added to strengthen its support for U.S. and allied government agencies, GreyNoise announced Wednesday.
GreyNoise CEO Ash Devata said adversaries are using AI to exploit routers, firewalls and other edge devices within minutes of a vulnerability’s discovery, while conventional detection tools cannot reach most of these systems.
Devata added that Miller and the three other new leaders bring expertise in using real-time threat intelligence to protect edge systems and will support the company’s national security work for the U.S. and its allies.
Who Is Steve Miller?
Miller is a threat intelligence professional whose career spans more than 20 years across incident response, detection engineering and threat intelligence.
Before joining GreyNoise, he led Google’s work on AI-related threats and served as the company’s principal analyst in that area. Prior to Google, he held senior threat intelligence positions at Microsoft, Mandiant, Stairwell and Anomali, where his responsibilities covered detection research, threat tracking and attribution, and product design.
Earlier in his career, Miller served as a digital forensics researcher at the Department of Homeland Security, a security engineer at Cornell University and a program manager at the National Security Agency.
What Does GreyNoise Do?
GreyNoise is a cybersecurity company that provides threat intelligence designed to help security teams identify and prioritize internet-wide attack activity targeting network edge systems. The company’s customer base includes more than 400 government agencies in Five Eyes, NATO and other allied countries that use its data to detect and analyze attacks against edge systems.
Miller’s appointment follows other recent moves at GreyNoise. In March, the company named Mike Habte director of federal sales. A month later, it launched a command-and-control detection capability to help federal agencies identify compromised assets earlier.
In an Executive Spotlight interview, Nishawn Smagh, director of intelligence at GreyNoise, said AI is accelerating both cyberattacks and cyber defense, narrowing the gap between vulnerability discovery and exploitation. In April, he cautioned that cybersecurity AI models may miss emerging threats because they learn from attacker activity that has already been confirmed.
