What Is Hanwha Proposing to the Army?

The Hanwha Aerospace subsidiary said Tuesday it is offering a mature, 155mm artillery platform designed for rapid fielding and aligned with the Army’s long-range precision fires modernization goals. Mike Smith, chief operating officer and president of land systems at Hanwha Defense USA, emphasized a system-level approach that integrates the platform with projectiles, propelling charges, and fire control and command-and-control capabilities.

“The Army is taking a similar system-of-systems approach to artillery modernization – innovating at the round, committing to a proven platform with ample margin for planned tech insertion, and employing a new robust resupply capability,” said Smith.

How Does Production Factor Into the Proposal?

According to Hanwha Defense USA CEO Michael Coulter, the company is offering a phased-in localization strategy to expand domestic production and support. The approach is intended to deliver proven manufacturing, tested defense technology and domestic jobs.

Phase 1 of the strategy will center on Alabama, where HDUSA is establishing its initial manufacturing and support foundation. This effort focuses on expanding production capacity and engaging with local suppliers to ensure long-term sustainment and potential technology insertions, such as autonomous software integration.

Hanwha Plans $1.3B Arkansas Munitions Facility

This announcement follows HDUSA’s plan to invest about $1.3 billion to build a munitions facility at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas. The Army selected the company for a lease for the project, which is expected to create about 200 jobs and produce key explosive and propellant materials.
