Dave Levy, vice president of federal business at Amazon Web Services and a 2020 Wash100 Award recipient, said there are three early lessons from the COVID-19 High Performance Computing Consortium and one is the capability of new technology platforms to help researchers expedite their work.
“Tools including deep learning and artificial intelligence are reducing time to insight for researchers around the world,†Levy wrote in a blog post published Thursday.
The other two lessons he mentioned are the different dimensions of COVID-19 health challenge as reflected by the diversity of research efforts and the commitment of public sector leaders and researchers to test new concepts and address the challenge posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Levy also shared his insights on several COVID-19-related research projects and discussed how such initiatives adopt machine learning, molecular dynamics simulations and other technologies to speed up coronavirus detection and development of treatments. Some of the projects he cited are the COVID Moonshot project led by PostEra and the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in sequence read archive data led by MIT.
Amazon is one of the tech companies that partnered with the White House and the Department of Energy in March to launch the consortium aimed at advancing research into COVID-19 using supercomputers.
