Long-range communications that keep units connected in difficult terrain are central to the Army’s TRILOS effort. Senior defense officials and industry executives will meet at the Potomac Officers Club’s 2027 Defense R&D Summit on Feb. 4 to discuss unmanned systems, 5G and future-generation wireless capabilities, trusted AI and autonomy, and other technologies shaping the future of warfare. The event will feature keynote addresses and panel discussions on assured connectivity for the contested fight, AI-driven networks for expeditionary forces and resilient communications for homeland defense. What Is the Scope of the Army Delivery Order?

The company said Thursday the order covers the radio, power and networking elements of the TRILOS capability. The Orion mission packages are intended to provide Army units with the capability to communicate over rugged terrain and long distances without relying on satellite connectivity.

According to Marconi, each package supports high-capacity, low-latency links across the Army’s tactical command and control backbone, which aims to shorten the time between detecting activity on the battlefield and commanders taking action.

Alain Cohen, CEO of Marconi Technologies, said the company redesigned its software-defined Orion radio line to continue supporting the Army’s most demanding communications missions.

“This delivery order places the latest and most capable long-range tactical radio in the Army’s hands; it’s also a testament to how well and diligently the U.S. Army team has partnered with industry to push the art-of-the-possible,” Cohen added.

What Is Orion?

Orion is a sixth-generation, software-defined tactical radio that supports high-throughput communications in contested settings. The radio offers frequency agility and survivability for units operating on the move or during short halts.

What Is Marconi Technologies?

Marconi Technologies is a veteran-operated defense technology company focused on developing and manufacturing dual-use communications systems, including line-of-sight tactical radios and beyond-line-of-sight troposcatter and satellite communications designed to support decision-making and autonomy. The company maintains development and manufacturing operations in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.

The delivery order follows a series of recent Army and special operations engagements for the company. In October, Marconi entered into a cooperative research and development agreement with the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s C5ISR Center to build a modular communications architecture for autonomous systems. The effort leverages the company’s Orion radios, Hunter satellite communications apertures and Archer troposcatter technology.

Days earlier, U.S. Special Operations Command selected Marconi to provide Orion X604 tactical radios under an initial contract, with the company expected to begin deliveries to a U.S. special operations unit in late 2026. The compact X604, the latest model in the Orion family, connects operators to sensor feeds from autonomous systems and to allied forces over shared tactical networks.
