- HPE has joined the DOE’s Genesis Mission to advance AI-driven scientific discovery

Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced Thursday that it has been selected to support multiple research and development projects under the first phase of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, expanding its longstanding collaboration with the agency to advance artificial intelligence-powered scientific research.
What Role Will HPE Play in the Genesis Mission?
The Genesis Mission seeks to establish an integrated platform combining AI, supercomputing, quantum technologies and advanced scientific instruments to accelerate breakthroughs in energy, national security and scientific discovery. HPE will work alongside government, academic and industry partners to develop research workflows that integrate AI into scientific investigations while evaluating their potential to improve predictive modeling, experimentation and discovery.
“We have a deep, decades-long R&D partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and its national laboratories that has ushered in world-leading innovation in scientific computing,” said Andrew Wheeler, deputy CTO, senior vice president and director of HPE Labs.
Which Research Initiatives Will HPE Support?
The company will contribute to various projects, including AI model applications, networking, cybersecurity and performance optimization. The company’s ongoing projects include developing an agentic AI system for fusion energy experiments, creating AI-enabled network architectures for swarm robotics, creating a platform for science-aware AI operations, advancing water supply forecasting using generative AI and strengthening cybersecurity for AI-driven scientific workflows.
HPE also will help optimize distributed scientific workflows using AI models that can automatically adapt applications across Genesis Mission computing resources.
In addition to its research responsibilities, HPE will deliver advanced computing systems supporting the initiative, including the upcoming Lux platform, which is expected to become the first dedicated AI system for science supporting the Genesis Mission. The company is developing Lux in collaboration with AMD and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
