Raquel Bono, former head of the Defense Health Agency and a three-time Wash100 Award recipient, has joined the board of directors of Louisville, Kentucky-based health insurance company Humana.

In her prior role as CEO and director of DHA, Bono managed the delivery of joint and integrated medical support to all U.S. military health units, Humana said Tuesday.

She also oversaw the Department of Defense agency’s $50B medical operations, health records, federal collaborations and global network of 50 hospitals and over 300 clinics.

Kurt Hilzinger, chairman of the board at Humana, said Bono’s extensive experience in trauma surgery, healthcare administration and system delivery management will “bring an important perspective to Humana’s Board and further contribute to its strategic composition.”

Bono was first commissioned in 1979 and served in active duty deployment for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991.

She previously spent time at the National Naval Medical Center where she directed the unit’s restorative care and medical–surgical services earlier in her career.

She retired from DHA with the rank of vice admiral in October and recently served as state director for COVID-19 health system response management in Washington.
