SOS International has made an investment in Applications Technology, a McLean, Va.-based developer of artificial intelligence-based speech recognition systems.

Julian Setian, SOSi president and CEO and a 2020 Wash100 award winner, will join AppTek’s board and SOSi will become the exclusive reseller of AppTek platforms to federal, local and state government agencies through the deal, SOSi said Wednesday.

Setian said SOSi has been providing language services in the federal market for more than three decades and the investment marks the company’s latest effort to deliver AI-based platforms to help customers advance their mission capabilities.

Established in 1990, AppTek develops automatic speech recognition, natural language processing and machine translation platforms using AI and machine learning.

SOSi’s acquisition of a noncontrolling interest in AppTek allows it to work with the latter company to develop platforms for unclassified and classified use cases. The deal came four months after SOSi purchased Denmark-based data analytics software firm NorthStar Systems.
