The Association of Government Accountants and Grant Thornton’s public sector arm have released a new survey describing how chief financial officers from federal and state government agencies manage the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and outlining several recommendations agency CFOs should consider as they navigate through the health crisis.

Robert Shea, a Grant Thornton principal, told Government Matters in an interview posted Tuesday about the challenges and the need for technology in response to the coronavirus pandemic. "One of the things I think we’ve learned is that we need to be pretty practised at what flexibilities agencies need to offer to their federal and contractor workforces,” he said. “Technology is a key enabler and will need to be in place in the future.”

Grant Thornton’s public sector business and the Partnership for Public Service organization have published a report that proposes a multifaceted approach for federal agency leaders to modernize operations with the use of data and evidence. The report, titled “Seize the Data: Using Evidence to Transform how Federal Agencies do Business," was based on interviews and workshops that took place from April 2018 to May 2019.
