Systems and Technology Research has won an $8.3M contract to help the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency study, develop and trial a testing environment in support of a program that aims to ensure effectiveness of airspace operations in future battlespace. The sought environment will serve as a testbed for airspace management systems, airspace planning algorithms and a network of aircraft-tracking sensors under DARPA's Air Space Total Awareness for Rapid Tactical Execution program, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

A vice president at Raytheon Technologies' intelligence and space arm has detailed how the business' use of open systems architecture in its programs aligns with the Department of Defense's requirement of employing non-proprietary software to ensure interoperability. Paul Meyer, VP for space and command and control systems at Raytheon Intelligence and Space, said in a Dec. 17 company post that DOD wants to ensure usability of military technologies across all warfighting domains: land, air, space, sea and cyber.

Kratos Defense and Security Solutions will perform engineering and logistics for BQM-177A aerial target systems under a new U.S. Navy-awarded $3.6M contract option that follows the completion of the full rate production effort. Steve Fendley, president of Kratos' unmanned systems division, said in a statement posted Thursday the company has begun operations and sustainment activities for the Navy's sub-sonic aerial target as part of the program's life cycle.

The Demonstration and Science Experiments satellite of the Air Force Research Laboratory performed the first space-to-space very low frequency transmission within three months of its launch during a coordinated experiment with the Japanese Space Agency's Arase spacecraft. The DSX satellite launched in June 2019 to study the interactions of space plasma, radiation belts and radio waves in near-Earth space.
