The U.S. Navy has tapped Fairbanks Morse to provide ship service diesel generator sets for an America-class vessel being built by Huntington Ingalls Industries.

The SSDGs will power the amphibious assault vessel LHA-9's electric power generation system, Fairbanks Morse said Tuesday.

LHA-9's diesel-powered electric system uses two induction-type auxiliary propulsion motors to support the propeller drive shaft. A gas turbine engine and a diese generator-powered electric motor are integrated into the hybrid-electric propulsion systems.

Fairbanks Morse will start construction of the SSDGs in 2021, with deliveries to HII expected to begin in 2023.

LHA-9 has speed of up to 12 knots and features a 106-foot beam that can displace over 44K tons in weight.
