BlackBerry has pledged to donate crisis communications software to the American Red Cross for use in disaster preparedness and relief and emergency assistance missions.

The company said Thursday its AtHoc technology provides vital information organizations can use to protect assets, people and operations in the event of a critical situation.

Jennifer Adrio, CEO at the American Red Cross' Northern California Coastal region, said the software allows the organization to communicate across multiple channels during crises such as wildfires.

The extended partnership is part of BlackBerry's initiative to help address United Nations' sustainable development goals.

Seventy percent of U.S. federal government employees use AtHoc, according to the company.
