Tommy Gardner, chief technology officer of HP’s federal subsidiary, has said that industry must collaborate with the government and academic sectors to establish frameworks and standards for cybersecurity as threats continue to evolve.

Gardner told Federal News Network in an interview aired Tuesday that cyber-focused collaborations with the academe will help strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity posture.

He cited efforts like Carnegie Mellon University’s work with the Department of Defense for the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program, which seeks to set requirements for firms that want to do business with the DoD.

“There’s a continuous investment and a continuous improvement that has to go on [with endpoint devices]. The reason is the threats are getting smarter, too,” he said.

Todd Gustafson, president of HP Federal, noted that the federal government is currently at the forefront of blockchain technology implementation in supply chain and endpoint device security.

According to Gustafson, it is crucial that U.S. organizations shift their focus from perimeter defense to data protection beyond the operating system.
