Anastasia Kelly's Biography
Anastasia 'Stasia' Kelly is executive vice president and general counsel of MCI. In her capacity as the company's chief legal officer, Kelly leads MCI's domestic and international legal, regulatory, and legislative efforts.
Prior to joining MCI, Kelly was senior vice president and general counsel of Sears, Roebuck and Co., where she was responsible for developing and implementing the corporate legal policy and strategy for that $40 billion retail and financial services company. She also managed the Corporate Secretary function, acting as the primary point of contact for the Board of Directors. As a member of the company's Operating Committee, she was responsible for assisting the Chairman and his team in developing and implementing the company's strategic plan.
Before her tenure at Sears, Kelly served as the senior vice president and general counsel and corporate secretary at Fannie Mae. As part of her duties, she reorganized and upgraded the in-house law team to face the increasing complexities of Fannie Mae's marketplace and customer demands. Kelly also interfaced regularly with key government regulators and members of Congress.
Prior to joining Fannie Mae, Kelly served as a partner and associate with Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, a major Washington, D.C. law firm, where her practice spanned several areas of the law, including regulation of financial institutions and securities firms. She counseled senior management and compliance officers of highly regulated institutions in all aspects of federal regulation. Kelly represented her clients before a number of federal and state regulatory agencies.
Kelly began her legal career as an associate with Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal, of Dallas, where her practice encompassed general and business litigation.
Kelly received her law degree magna cum laude from George Washington University in 1981, while working for Martin Marietta Corporation as an employee benefits director and manager. Kelly was a member of the Order of the Coif and the George Washington University Law Review. In addition to her law degree, Kelly possesses a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Trinity College, in Washington, D.C.
Kelly serves on the Board of Directors of Owens-Illinois, one of the world's leading producers of glass and plastics; as a Trustee of Trinity College in Washington, D.C.; as Vice-Chair of Equal Justice Works as well as the Association of Corporate Counsel; and Lawyers for Children America. She is a member of the Advisory Council for the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars; the American Bar Association's Committee on Corporate Laws; and the Chicago Network, an organization of Chicago's most influential professional women.
Kelly is a member of the bars of Texas, the District of Columbia and Virginia.
