  • CEO "In or Out of your business" quiz
    Date: 12/13/2007
"Copy This" is a recent business book written by Paul Orfalea, the kinky haired Founder and CEO of Kinko's. He named his business "Kinko's" after his college curly headed nickname. His extreme Dyslexia places him in the very good CEO company of John Chambers - Cisco, Charles Schwab, Richard Branson, Craig McCaw and others. One of Orfalea's challenges was to not get caught up in the operation of the business and he quotes Benjamin Franklin who cautions CEO's to "Drive thy business and not let thy business drive thee". Paul Orfalea has a simple 7 question quiz you can take here to see if you know the difference between working on your business or working in your business.Read Full Digital Magazine ...

  • RSIS sold to Wyle
    Date: 12/06/2007
Over the last few years, there’s been intense ongoing speculation among the government contracting crowd that RSIS was looking to be acquired. The company, which started as a small business and had been operating at around $300 Million, was now squarely in the “no man's land” of Government Contracting. That position in “no man's land” is because their revenue clearly qualified them as greater than small company status, but not large enough to be consider one of the major players.Read Full Digital Magazine ...

  • Do you have CEO traits?
    Date: 11/29/2007
Do you have the traits that three University of Chicago professors ranked as most important for CEO’s? An important finding was that the traits that might make you successful as an entrepreneur, are not those required once you are past that point. While this may be common knowledge, the most important traits might surprise you.Read Full Digital Magazine ...

  • Apple worth more than IBM
    Date: 10/25/2007
Did YOU buy the stock? With a market cap of $162 billion, Apple is now worth more than IBM at $156 billion. Hard to believe that Steve Jobs could accomplish this in such a short period of time. It makes you wonder if Google’s market cap of $157 billion might catch Microsoft’s staggering $291 billion. They are past the halfway point. Microsoft does not plan to sit still. CEO Steve Balmer announced Microsoft’s plans to acquire companies at a rate of about 20 per year for the next five years!Read Full Digital Magazine ...

  • Blame the designer – or adopt Crowdsourcing
    Date: 10/18/2007
In the immortal words of consulting guru Tom Peters, “blame the designer!” We have the ability to take comfort when things go wrong because we can readily see a product's flaw. Like when the Starbucks lid allows coffee to splash out onto your white shirt. And you mutter “who designed this lid” along with a string of sailor approved expletives!

Companies know that you know what you want. Interactive Web 2.0 technologies are now enabling businesses to use their customers to lead product design, create content and solve problems. “Crowdsourcing”, which allows people to take part in online discussions and vote on what the company should be doing, is already starting to take off.Read Full Digital Magazine ...

  • Anchors Away - Navy CEO's
    Date: 10/04/2007
I don’t have any empirical data to suggest which military branch produces the best or most CEO’s, but, I can’t help but get the feeling that there is an abundance of ex-Naval officers running large government contracting firms. Perhaps this can be best discussed in December at the annual Army Navy game (“The Game”). In the meantime, readers might be interested in reading our entertaining column aptly named “There must be something in the water”. We name several familiar Navy bosses like Jack London (CACI), Jerry Agee (Northrop), Brad Antle (SI International), Phil Nolan (Stanley), Bill Hoover (ASC) and Jim Ballard (Perot Federal). From the sidelines, I’d also offer some others like Jim Sheaffer (CSC), Dennis Kelly (TechTeam) and Joe Craver (SAIC) just to name a few.Read Full Digital Magazine ...

  • US Dollar falls to a 15 year low
    Date: 09/13/2007
The US Dollar fell to a surprising 15-year low against a basket of currencies on September 11th and is under pressure in anticipation of the fed’s announcement next week. Experts are predicting a 1/4 to 1/2 point drop in interest rates and that is when we will have a clearer picture of the market reaction. The wildcard remains oil prices which have spiked again as a result of attacks on pipelines in Mexico.

The US economy has become increasingly intertwined with Mexico as our significant continental partner. Add in pressure on exchange rates caused by emigration issues and cross border security as a catalyst for possible further declines. Read Full Digital Magazine ...

  • Facebook, the new Linked-In?
    Date: 09/06/2007
I am not the only one that’s noticed my Facebook invitations are increasing and my Linked-In invitations are falling. Having well over 500 connections on Linked-In, I feel connected but stabilized in my number of connections. Facebook, on the other hand is building up steam.

Facebook, once reserved for students, recently opened up their site to anyone that wanted to join. The response was overwhelming and The Wall St. Journal this week referred to Facebook as an “online gold rush”. It seems that Facebook is evolving past Linked-In because it is more customizable and allows independent developers to write applications that work within their user community. • A-Space, where secret people hang out
    Date: 08/30/2007
Secret people like the CIA that is. This December, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) will be following the national Web 2.0 trend and plans to roll out a social networking platform called A-Space to tie the secret communities into a secret knot and connect people and agencies. This newly adopted technology will hopefully improve remote location communication, after hours communications and ease sharing challenges that affect an agency’s individual contributor’s ability to communicate. Broad based security like firewalls and restricted dialing make socializing even harder for the spy and intelligence communities and information sharing more complex.Read Full Digital Magazine ...

  • New Trend: The 4 Hour Workweek
    Date: 06/28/2007
Are you working too many hours? On average, Americans are not only working more hours but feeling more anxiety according to CNBC. Author Timothy Ferris has written an enlightening view on “work” that have placed his book “The Four Hour Workweek” on the New York Times Bestseller list.

While the CEO crowd might not be able to remain competitive in such an abbreviated workweek, they should read the book to ensure their workforce doesn’t try to unplug and join the vagabonding Ferris in his step by step manual. Having read (and enjoyed) the book myself, I really enjoyed Ferris’ perspective that we Americans live a lifestyle of deferred enjoyment. By the time we retire, life has passed us by. Ferris advocates a life that alternates between mini retirements and periods of meaningful work.Read Full Digital Magazine ...

Local company CACI International was mentioned by Forbes as a prime example of this investment strategy. We caught up with Jack London, CACI Chairman, President, and CEO, who commented, “Forbes has locked on to our strategy like a guided missile. • Going Green is the Latest Corporate Buzz
    Date: 05/24/2007
What does it mean to be green? It’s almost impossible to pick up a business magazine without something on the Green movement or Global Warming. At the opening of Wolf Trap this week, the Wolf Trap CEO Terry Jones announced that they were going officially green and that the opening festivities were “A Carbon-free event”. They also had the GEICO Gecko on hand at Wolf Trap but as green as he is, I am certain he wasn’t part of that message. But Dell Computer is part of that message. On Earth Day last month they and the EPA hauled away 40 tons of unwanted computer equipment from Washington DC by the truckload as part of their nationwide effort to meet a goal of collecting 275 million pounds of product from customers by 2009.

This Green movement is no longer just a “West Coast Thing” and we have already heard Fairfax County Chairman Gerry Connolly declare that Fairfax will be the first green county and Governor Tim Kaine is putting increased spending pressure on the cleanup of the Potomac.Read Full Digital Magazine ...
