ExecutiveBiz: You recently went on a trip to Japan on behalf of the US government. Please tell us about the trip. When was it? When did you get back?
Gary Nakamoto:
Visiting Japan and the World Exposition (Aichi) was an incredible experience. Over 130 countries are participating in the 2005 Expo in addition to many leading businesses, universities and organizations. To date, over 8 million people have attended the World Expo.
- Advances in technology, transportation systems and other areas of development were highlighted throughout the Expo. Additionally, individual nations and businesses hosted pavilions that featured celebrations, entertainment and demonstrated the latest innovations.
- Trip: June 17-21, 2005
ExecutiveBiz: Why did you go?
Gary Nakamoto:
President Bush appointed a Presidential Delegation to attend the U.S. National Day celebration. The United States Presidential Delegation members are:
- The Honorable Margaret Spellings, U.S. Secretary of Education
- The Honorable Thomas Schieffer, Ambassador of the United States to Japan
- The Honorable Lisa G. Gable, Commissioner General of the U.S. Exhibition
- Thomas "Tommy" Lasorda, Member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Special Advisor to the Chairman of the Board of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
ExecutiveBiz: What was the highlight of the trip?
Gary Nakamoto:
The trip was filled with many highlights. Personally, the people I traveled with
and met at the events were by far the most interesting part of the trip. Also, learning more about advances in technology and intelligent transportation systems was enlightening.
ExecutiveBiz: Tommy Lasorda was also on the trip. What was like to have him on the trip?
Gary Nakamoto:
Traveling with Tommy Lasorda was a tremendous privilege. Baseball fans from all over the world approached him and he was incredibly friendly and gracious. Tommy was so well received in Japan that he clearly is the "Ambassador of Baseball". His life story is truly an American dream and his passion for all of baseball and people is legendary – he is a real patriot.
ExecutiveBiz: Who else was on the trip?
Gary Nakamoto:
Margaret Spellings (U.S. Secretary of Education) is a dynamic advocate for education. She has a sincere and genuine love for children and wants to ensure that every child receives an education that prepares them for the future. Also, Jeffery Eubank, Christian Vanderbrouck, Angela Landers and Roger Masone from the State Department and Department of Education represented their respective agencies with the highest level of professionalism.
ExecutiveBiz: What did you learn on the trip?
Gary Nakamoto:
Clearly, we are entering into an era of great challenge and incredible opportunity. The world is rapidly changing and more countries are competing across the globe. The challenge of our time is to both anticipate and respond to future opportunities. After observing the latest ideas in technology it is very apparent that we are only beginning to ‘scratch the surface' of our true potential. As we advance, it is imperative that we do so with integrity and compassion for all people.
