Governor Mark R. Warner Comments on George Mason University as a Potential Major Research Institution
VIENNA, VA, January 27, 2005 – In an exclusive interview with ExecutiveBiz, the DC area's business e-magazine, Governor Mark R. Warner proclaims that George Mason's potential to become a major research institution is very good.
Recent comments made by Virginia's Secretary of Technology, Eugene J. Huang, regarding George Mason suggest otherwise and have become the center of an escalating debate on George Mason University falling short of being a world-class research institution.
The Governor's comments come on the heels of a disagreement between Virginia's Secretary of Technology and George Mason University President Alan G. Merten, who claimed to be "baffled" by Huang's suggestion of alternatives to GMU.
Also in the interview, Governor Warner talked about why he might come back as Governor in four years and what he thought about the recent Inauguration of President Bush. The interview will run in the January 27th issue and can be viewed at www.executivebiz.com/warner.
Selected excerpts from the interview include:
- The Governor's position on Huang's comments re: GMU --"No, I don't agree with him. I think his comments were just wrong. George Mason has been an essential part of Northern Virginia's growth over the last twenty years. With two Nobel laureates at George Mason, I think George Mason's potential to become a major research institution is very good."
- The possibility of coming back as Governor in four years -- "There is a lot more that I know about this job today than when I first got the job."
