  • What's the Future of Sprint-Nextel?

A front-page news item about a local Fortune 500 company in this week’s Wall Street Journal (WSJ) should have caught your eye: On Tuesday, it was reported that Sprint Nextel Corp., is considering spinning off or selling its “ailing” Nextel unit — this just three years after purchasing the Reston-based Nextel for $35 billion. The WSJ piece went on to say that Sprint is considering various options: Among other things, Sprint has held initial talks with Nextel founder Morgan O'Brien, who is reportedly trying to assemble a team of investors to buy Nextel.

        Dan Hesse

So, where does this latest news in the Sprint-Nextel saga leave the company overall? And — just as critically — what’s the future of Sprint in the Washington, DC area?

There’s no better person to ask than Dan Hesse, President and CEO of Sprint Nextel. On June 5th, Hesse will weigh in on these and other issues as he speaks to members of the Potomac Officers Club. Members can register here.

Ever since Hesse assumed his new leadership role in 2007, he’s been making his presence known. You may have already caught his nationally-televised commercial.

"I'm always looking for outside organizations to join where I can learn important lessons or hear about other people's experiences that I can apply to my job. That's certainly been the case with ExecutiveBiz. What I especially like is the smaller, more focused gatherings which allows you to get deeper on a particular subject and the very diverse membership. It's helpful for me to hear from folks in different markets and professions."

Tiffanny Gates, president and owner of Emerging Technologies Group USA

    Tiffanny Gates
    Tiffanny Gates

Tiffanny Gates has come a long way since her early days as a signals intelligence officer with the Navy. In 2001, she started her own company, Emerging Technologies Group USA — this at a time when there weren’t many companies with critical skills in computer forensics and technical analysis serving the government or customers in the commercial and legal fields. Today, ETG has over 60 employees, with just over $12 million in revenue last year, and counts the Department of Defense, Department of State, and Department of Justice, as well as the intelligence community, among its clients. In the following Q&A, Gates shares her tips for retaining top talent, and weighs in on hot trends in the field of data security.

Along the way, Kay founded the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund. Since 1996, HDSF has helped nearly 900 high-achieving students realize their dreams of attending college. In the following Q&A, Kay discusses HDSF, and the upcoming 13th Annual Charity Basketball Tournament & Community Festival, an event free and open to the public, in which more than 2,000 people will come together to celebrate high-achieving students from the District’s public schools.
