  • Recall of Telecommuters Begs a Question of Success

Rethinking Telecommuting? The Wall St. Journal this week published a column questioning telecommuting titled Some Companies Rethink the Telecommuting Trend. Employers are calling their workers back to the office, causing some to resign. Read about it here.

The Washington area should take note because the number of government federal workers telecommuting actually dropped between 2005-2006 by 7.3% according to WSJ writer Sue Shellenbarger. Large companies such as AT&T, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, while indicating they support telecommuting, are actually reducing the number of employees that can participate.

Fed 100 Distinction lands on CACI ... Again

    Paul Cofoni
    Paul Cofoni

CACI President and CEO Paul Cofoni was named as a Federal 100 Awards winner last week, if there may have been an individual who took even more pride in the distinction than Cofoni; that would have been Jack London. After all, CACI’s Chairman - and former CEO - worked closely with Cofoni after the executive arrived from CSC in 2005 in order to ensure that the company’s next leader would continue CACI’s tradition for innovation and excellence.

"I'm always looking for outside organizations to join where I can learn important lessons or hear about other people's experiences that I can apply to my job. That's certainly been the case with ExecutiveBiz. What I especially like is the smaller, more focused gatherings which allows you to get deeper on a particular subject and the very diverse membership. It's helpful for me to hear from folks in different markets and professions."

    • Charles Church joins ACS
          Charles Church
      Charles Church

March 5, 2008 by Lisa Singh
Charles Church signed up to work for the government a month after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with one intent: to help national security with his knowledge of information technology. His plan was to stay five years and return to the private sector once his sons reached college age. In the end, Church stayed a bit longer — and not without his share of successes. Just last year, Church was one of three federal CIOs recognized by a committee of eight of the top editors and writers from Ziff Davis publications, CIO Insight, Baseline and eWeek. Now, as Church departs for the private sector, he looks back on his record of success — and the lessons learned along the way.
    • O’Brien discusses her new role as Robbins-Gioia president
March 5, 2008 by Lisa Singh
In the past, because of the way intelligence operated, people were only allowed to see one piece of the puzzle. These days, through the help of industry leaders like Robbins-Gioia, technology has enabled us to see the whole picture. In her new leadership role at R-G, Marie O’Brien is helping R-G stay a front runner in the field of program management data. Fresh on the heels of her new position, O’Brien shares R-G’s latest endeavors, how her team stays current to such long-standing clients as DoD, and what people might be surprised to learn about her (hint: It has something to do with Bono of U2).
    • Khari Brown of Capital Partners for Education
March 4, 2008 by Lisa Singh
For the past seven years, Khari Brown has been on a mission. As executive director of Capital Partners for Education, he and the organization he oversees have helped youth from some of Washington, D.C.’s poorest communities have a shot at a better education. Since the program’s inception, over 100 students have graduated from D.C.-area private high schools with the help of CPE.
    • Fed 100 Distinction lands on CACI Again
March 3, 2008 by Brian Lustig
When CACI President and CEO Paul Cofoni was named as a Federal 100 Awards winner last week, there might have been an individual who took even more pride in the distinction than Cofoni - Jack London. After all, CACI’s Chairman - and former CEO - worked closely with Cofoni after the executive arrived from CSC in 2005 in order to ensure that the company’s next leader would continue CACI’s traditional for innovation and excellence.
    • Phil Lantz, founder and president of SPA, talks longevity
February 29, 2008 by Lisa Singh
When Phil Lantz left his small Wyoming town of 20,000, then wrapped up a four-year stint in the Navy, he had one overriding dream: to make it in Washington, D.C. In the 35 years since he started his own company, Systems Planning and Analysis, he’s more than succeeded. In a fierce field of competitors, SPA has grown from three to 465 employees, and proven itself to be an indispensible resource for clients such as DoD and Department of Homeland Security. So, what’s the secret to Lantz’s success? Simple, he says: Focus on solving your clients’ challenging problems, and the rest will follow.
    • 12 Hours; 2 Conferences; free mints; my day with the New New Internet

    • EDS US Gov Leader Dennis Stokley
          Dennis Stolkey
      Dennis Stolkey

February 28, 2008 by JD Kathuria
Dennis Stolkey has always been a climber. In fact, long before he ever signed up with EDS, he started his career as one of those guys who climb telephone polls. He sure has come a long way. Over the past 22 years, Stolkey has made an impressive ascent through EDS’s ranks, and now manages its U.S. government sector — a practice worth $3 billion, no less. So, what accounts for his staying power? In the following Q&A, Stolkey shares a few tricks of the trade, discusses the future of EDS in the midst of the upcoming U.S. Presidential election, and dishes on whether Washington, D.C. can ever really beat his home state of Texas for a weekend of fun and relaxation.
