  • RSIS sold to Wyle

Over the last few years, there’s been intense ongoing speculation among the government contracting crowd that RSIS was looking to be acquired. The company, which started as a small business and had been operating at around $300 Million, was now squarely in the “no man's land” of Government Contracting. That position in “no man's land” is because their revenue clearly qualified them as greater than small company status, but not large enough to be considered one of the major players.

    Ron Trowbridge

In a recent interview, ExecutiveBiz asked the current EVP and 25% owner of RSIS Ron Trowbridge (Rodney Hunt owns the other 75%) about the possibility of acquisition. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. With this acquisition, Wyle will now be a major player in the DC area and will increase its employee base to more than 4,200 and its 2008 revenue to about $800 million. You can read the press release. This transaction when complete will be of the largest acquisitions in the DC area in the government contracting space for 2007.

Apptis CEO Bert Notini brings in a ringer

Speaking of mergers and acquisitions, fresh off the heels of his successful sale of Apogen to Qinetiq, veteran GovCon executive Paul Leslie finds a new gig at Apptis. The question is: will Leslie's M&A skills be used as a "hunter" or as "the hunted"?

He is again holding his annual Las Vegas Government CES event along with the Consumer Electronic Show on January 9th and 10th. The event is designed for executives and features a great line-up of speakers. Read more online or contact Caroline Boyd at cboyd@cesgovernment.com.

George Wilson is the EVP at Stanley. Many government contracting executives have a Navy background and George is no exception, just like his boss CEO Phil Nolan. George joined Stanley in 1989 as a program manager, and soon assumed the position of leading the strategic development of the company, which he continues to hold today. The company went public in October 2006. There is a portion of the stock that is held by the public market, but a majority of the stock is still held by the employees. We catch up with him to discuss his background, the hot trends he is tracking, and what he looks for in an acquisition.

    • Speeding the delivery of Web2.0 capabilities into government
December 5, 2007 by Bob Gourley
IT leaders in government are wrestling with several competing forces in the Web2.0 world. The greatest force is a push for change towards more user-focused computing. But a resisting counter force threatens to delay this change.
    • Twitter – Micro-Blogging for the Enterprise?
December 5, 2007 by Mit Majithia
Barely a day goes by that we do not hear about the growth of Twitter and the how addictive it can be in terms of its usage. As more people get used to the idea, it acts like a controlled form of Instant Messaging – not as invasive as Skype or AIM and more instant than an email along with the ability to broadcast. Among the many various applications being envisaged, the million-dollar question is whether it will be used in the enterprise or not ? Send 30 minute updates to your team about the status of your project ? Assign tasks to team members on your way home on the subway ? Instant notification of schedule changes ? Will it get the stamp of validity from corporate customers who will use this tool to communicate with their employees or customers ?
    • Centurum increasingly at center of major Gov’t contracts
December 4, 2007 by Brian Lustig
It is becoming clear that there is in fact a happy medium between the old – and currently unraveling – Japanese keiretsu system that guaranteed lifetime employment and a younger generation here in the U.S. that hops between jobs as if they were hopping from the Red Line to the Blue Line at Metro Center
    • Contractors Swoop In to Fill Void as Aging Feds Retire
December 4, 2007 by John Stauffer
More than 60,000 federal workers retired in 2006 according to a recent BusinessWeek article. That leaves a lot of unoccupied desks across the federal government. While Uncle Sam scrambles to recruit a new generation of workers, contractors have already begun to replace many of the vacancies.
