    Michael Chasen
    Michael Chasen

Michael Chasen, CEO of Blackboard, announced yesterday that quarter over quarter revenues had increased 36% to almost $60 million. Chasen, who will be speaking at the Potomac Officers Club on September 12th, has emerged as what many might call the “last man (dot com) standing”. A celebrity CEO of the Dot Com days, he is a rare exception in that he has survived and flourished as a local success story. Launching a successful IPO in 2004 and achieving a doubling of his stock price since that time, Chasen has demonstrated an ability to grow as a CEO along with the rapidly scaling organization he founded with Blackboard Chairman Matthew Pittinsky.

Web 2.0 Spotlight: Microsoft Works 9

There has always been a high demand for office suites. Now, there’s a high demand for free online office suites. Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Thinkfree Office, and Zoho are a few among the many that offer their applications to the public. So Microsoft, who has traditionally focused on Microsoft Office, just released Microsoft Works 9—an ad supported office package of no charge. Works 9 is targeted towards college students and other customers who don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on traditional software. It includes a word processor, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint capabilities.

Microsoft Works 9 just launched late last week. Go here to do a product demo or to order it.
