Area Leaders Discuss Web 2.0
Keep hearing about Web 2.0?
There’s a reason. Some area tech firms are betting the company on the ability to build and maintain communities. Web 2.0 is a disruptive technology that will dramatically change business models. Your company had better plan to ditch the boring static web pages that read like poorly written marketing material and maintain your community of customers, suppliers, partners and strategic resource providers like Google. Read on to see what area leaders like Ted Leonsis – Vice Chairman AOL, Aneesh Chopra – Virginia Secretary of Technology and Rob McGovern – CEO of Market10 have to say about Web 2.0.

Take me out to the Ballpark
ExecutiveBiz caught up with these familiar faces at RFK where they not only watch the game but all watch out for what happens “Inside Baseball” Potomac Officers Club members were treated to a very candid speech by Stan Kasten, newly hired president of the Washington Nationals. The event, sponsored by Studley's Art Greenberg and Tom Fulcher was filled with great stories and an insight into the many grand plans of Stan Kasten. His track record in Atlanta is one of impressive accomplishment and wonderful vignettes.

Wonder how the upcoming elections are going to shape up?
 Terry McAuliffe

And also the role business issues will play in the decision for a front running leader from both parties? Terry McAuliffe, former Chairman of the DNC, Graduate of Georgetown University’s Law Center and a hugely successful entrepreneur that started over two-dozen companies in the fields of banking, insurance, marketing and real estate will be speaking at the next POC event, Thursday, July 20. Mr. McAuliffe served as Chairman of Federal City National Bank at the age of 30, and most recently was an owner and Chairman of American Heritage Homes. The event is sponsored Cushman & Wakefield. ExecutiveBiz Spotlight: Gino Picasso
This week features Gino Picasso, who joined Mobile365 as chief executive officer. He is a seasoned communications executive with a great track record here in Northern Virginia. Click here to read interview.
Executive travelers are going to be traveling less. In last week’s survey, we were surprised to see that less business trips appear to be in the works. Could this be a confirming indicator that the economy is cooling, or that travel prices are falling, web conferencing is catching on or maybe people are just sick of travel? Click here to take this week’s survey.

Thoughts on Web 2.0

 Ted Leonsis
"How will Web 2.0 applications change the face of business? The better question is how won't they change the face of business. The implications of the next generation Internet on business are more profound that the Internet's first generation. New tools and technologies are enabling consumers to be more engaged, more connected, more creative -- on a worldwide basis -- than was ever possible before. That's creating vast new opportunities for businesses to reach consumers, and equally big challenges in how to do so effectively."
-- Ted Leonsis, Vice Chairman of AOL
 Aneesh Chopra
"It will democratize access to advanced services. For entrepreneurs, it might accelerate time to market; for consumers, it means an exponential growth rate for solutions to manage one’s life a bit better. As an IT purchaser, I anticipate Web 2.0 to fundamentally impact our procurement approach with a greater emphasis on collaboration."
-- Aneesh Chopra, Sec of Technology, State of VA
 Rob McGovern
"Here’s a question you can ask a software programmer to know if they are from the modern era: ‘Do you have any idea where the computer you are programming is physically located?’ Freed from the constraints of yesterday’s physical computing model, the Web 2.0’ers aspire to mash-up (interconnect with other Web 2.0 programs) to create novel new solutions that are going to decimate the software industry as we know it. In ten years the idea of buying a software “package” will seem as yesterday as going to the video store."
-- Rob McGovern, CEO of market10
 Duke Chung
"Web 2.0 is the next generation of web enhancements that will broaden and augment the web experience for all Internet Users. The Web 2.0 represents the shift from installed packaged software with “monolithic release” to the age of hosted Web software, where releases are made regularly and upgraded right through the web. But more exciting is to see how Web 2.0 addresses the “Long Tail” by using the internet to reach out and enable even the smallest to mid-size businesses with web software. We also believe that new and innovative Web 2.0 technologies such as AJAX are going to make the web experience as seamless as using an application in the Windows desktop environment. Web 2.0 is an exciting development for the Internet and has already proven to offer enhancements for many businesses with regards to hosted Web software."
-- Duke Chung, CEO of Parature
 Dave Garrett
"The ‘right answers’ have always been what the majority feels they should be. Web 2.0 will not only help businesses benefit from individual contributions, but understand collective wisdom in ways that were not possible before."
-- Dave Garrett, ceo of gantthead.com

Go Nationals!
What were Jack Evans, Stan Kasten, Herb Miller and Bill Hall discussing at last Friday night’s Nationals game at RFK?
Was it the new hot dog concession stands? Or, were they discussing the upcoming D.C. Council vote to sell a portion of city’s land next to the stadium to Herb Miller? On Tuesday, the D.C. Council approved a plan to sell Herb Miller a portion of the city’s land and he plans to build a mix of parking garages, shops, condos and a hotel.
